Bariloche, Argentina

Welcome to Bariloche

I’d been told that Bariloche had spectacular scenery and was not to be missed, so based on this research and nothing else I booked a flight. Much later, I did a little bit of research and discovered that Bariloche is also considered the chocolate capital of Argentina.  What a happy coincidence!

On our first evening in the town, we had a quick dinner and then spent a bit of time wandering around and getting our bearings. It’s gorgeous! It’s a ski town, situated at the foothill of the Andes, surrounded by lakes and mountains. The main buildings in the town centre are all pretty new, and there’s definitely a Swiss / German feel to it. Every other shop seems to be a chocolate shop, the most famous and supposedly the best is Mamuschka. Obviously, some research will be required in order to confirm whether or not this is actually the case.

First up on the agenda though was horseriding at Estancia Fortín Chacabuco, about 30 minutes out of Bariloche on the Patagonian plains. Yes, those of you who are related to me can stop laughing now, and what’s more it was even my idea. Armed with fistfuls of hayfever and asthma medication, we made our way to the Estancia around lunchtime and had time for a walk. Then we all sat down together for a delicious Parilla (BBQ).  We were served plates of beef, chorizo and salad until I thought we were going to pop.

Then finally it was time to get on the horse. Given that I was last on a horse at about age 8 and I am seriously allergic to horses, I was a bit nervous to say the least. But some of the others on this trip had never even ridden a horse before and the horses were extremely gentle and patient. And having taken 3 anti-histamines and being careful not to actually touch the horse (quite tricky when you’re on one) it went very well all things considering.  I must’ve been successful in limiting my direct contact with the horse, because only a portion of exposed skin on my legs developed hives.

The scenery was absolutely stunning, and the day was gorgeously sunny. We had a really great group of people on our horse ride, including some hilarious and quite thick accents from Yorkshire, UK and West Virginia, USA. Although in fairness they probably thought ours was pretty funny too. So all in all, another fantastic day in Argentina.
