Helicopter tour to the Grand Canyon

Flying High – Choppers & Views

I love looking at the world from above, be it from a plane, a cable car, a mountain after a hike, or even a hot air balloon.  But a helicopter has to be my favourite – what’s not to like?  Choppers give you great views, and it’s thrilling, exciting and fun!  If you’re short on time you get to see as much as possible in your limited time, and it’s also a great way to get your bearings if you’re new to a destination.

Obviously chopper rides aren’t cheap. But here’s five chopper rides that are worth the money and that I can recommend if you get the chance – experiences that are hard to beat.

1. Tokyo at sunset

Tokyo is a huge, sprawling city, and having the opportunity to view it from above gave me a greater appreciation of its beauty.  The sunset was absolutely spectacular.  With the Tokyo Skytree and Mt Fuji in the horizon, colours of pink, purple, orange and fiery red all merged and blended together.  It is absolutely gorgeous.

2. Alice Springs

My first visit to Alice Springs was a fleeting one, and to truly experience and see the beautiful MacDonnell ranges I really needed more time.  So 20 minutes up in the air was perfect to give me a sense of the landscape.  It’s stunning, and it was enough to tempt me to return again.

3. Iguazu Falls

One of the most awe-inspiring sights I’ve ever seen, the word ‘waterfall’ doesn’t really do this justice, as it’s actually hundreds of waterfalls stretching for nearly 3 kms, surrounded by a lush, dense, green rainforest.  As you fly towards it you first see thick clouds of water, then as you get closer you start to truly appreciate the scale and majesty of Iguazu.

4. Garden isle of Kauai

An injury meant my plans for exploring and hiking Kauai were off the table, so I thought that the next best thing would be a helicopter ride.  I wasn’t wrong!  It was spectacular, with perfect views of the magnificent Napali coast, tucked away beaches, the lush green trails and forests, and glimpses of hidden waterfalls.

5. Las Vegas & the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is at least a 4-hour drive away from Las Vegas, but if you’re short on time I highly recommend the helicopter ride.  We flew over Lake Mead, the Hoover Dam – an engineering wonder of its day – and landed in the Grand Canyon for bubbles and a snack.  As we flew back in to Las Vegas the sun was going down and the city lights were coming out.  It was a fantastic experience, easily the highlight of my entire trip.

Wow, those are some spectacular sights, Rachael.
I have done helicopter rides in Hawaii but would love to do some of the others you have done.
Still lousy weather here…..very bad in the Dunedin area with record rainfall and a lot of flooding.
Hope it is better in Sydney!!!

    • I hope the weather clears up for you! You are welcome here in Sydney anytime. I’m heading to Europe soon so hopefully will be summer by the time I return! Although I can’t really complain, it’s been beautiful.
